Service of Legal Documents

During regular business hours, only the Office of the General Counsel is authorized to accept service of legal documents, including subpoenas, warrants, court orders, and notices to appear on behalf of ³Õºº¾ãÀÖ²¿ College. Outside of regular business hours, the Office of Safety and Security is authorized to receive service of process on behalf of the College. Security will immediately notify the Legal Officer.

If approached by a process server, you should "refuse service," meaning tell the process server that you cannot accept receipt of the legal document on behalf of the College. Then, promptly inform the process server to contact the Office of the General Counsel directly, at Hawthorne-Longfellow Hall (253 Maine Street), 207-721-5230, k.chapman@bowdoin.edu, or the Office of Safety and Security if outside regular business hours.

If you find that you have received a legal document relating to College business (such as a subpoena, a complaint, a hearing notice, or any document or notice relating to a legal proceeding) by mail or otherwise, please notify the Office of the General Counsel immediately and we will arrange to pick up the documents from you.
